Las Vegas DevelopmentsIn 2005 Steve Wynn unleashed the most recent and the biggest construction boom in Las Vegas and the city has been growing ever since…not that it was remotely stagnant before. There have been more than one hundred and ten high-rises, mixed-use buildings, hotels and other significant projects in Vegas. These projects are all in a variety of building stages from planning to development to the actual construction. The Las Vegas Strip itself, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, almost cannot hold all of the new building projects that have come its way. Las Vegans like to brag that the strip is the home of the latest in urban architectural development, the latest in architectural design and even the latest in technology. Slowly but surely LEED certified “green” structures are starting to be built. Architects who are considered “world famous” are interested in a piece of the Las Vegas building action.
While tourists like to think that “The Strip” is the equivalent to a downtown area in the city of Las Vegas, the locals know that downtown is actually a couple of weeks away from the famed attraction. If anything Fremont Street is closer to downtown and even that isn’t the “real” downtown of Las Vegas. Currently the actual area of downtown Las Vegas is going through a major transformation. It is becoming modern, sustainable and a “typical” urban city. There are public facilities, projects on transportation, lofts, and even high rise condominiums being built throughout the galleries, shops, bistros, clubs and even markets that are popping up everywhere. What used to be a seedy yet glamorous gaming town where people went to see and be seen is turning into a sustainable, environmentally friendly city not unlike the other major cities in the country. What’s New In Las Vegas Entertainment Celine Dion, the performer for whom the Caesar’s Palace Coliseum was built at the turn of the millennium, will be stepping down as the headlining Coliseum performer in February of 2008. She is going to be replaced by Bette Midler and there are already tickets on sale to see Bette Midler in concert! Midler will perform five nights of every week and she is slated to perform at least one hundred concerts per year for a minimum of two years. Because Elton John is keeping his fifty shows a year contract, there will only be enough performance time to include one other artist in the Coliseum lineup. While the performer has yet to be announced, some have speculated that Cher will be stepping up to fill the bill. Of course, as of press time, this has yet to be decided. The legendary Stardust Hotel and Casino Towers (the world’s largest hotel when it opened in 1958) were imploded at 2:30 in the morning on March 13 of 2007. There is a project in place to replace the towers, but it probably won’t be finished until 2010. The replacement is going to be named the Echelon Place Complex and will have 5300 rooms. In April of 2007, Planet Hollywood officially announced that it was taking over the Aladdin Resort and Casino and renovating it to become the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. For a company that has had its share of financial difficulty, this was a big announcement, but completion of the resort is expected to happen in late 2007. There is already a website up with information on reservations and attractions located on site. The Grand Opening is expected to be November 16th and 17th. It is also going to be the site of the Resident Evil world premiere. |
